Fostering Student Independence

1.5 CPDs   Run Time 46:34

Maria Montessori advocated for a paradigm shift she called “auto-education,” stating the role of the teacher was to be a guide to learning rather than a conveyer of direct instruction. Unless you fully accept this role as a teacher, your students will not be the independent learners Montessori envisioned. In this session, the presenters will discuss classroom practices that encourage—or undermine—independence. You will leave ready to examine how your own teaching can maximize your students’ independence and foster lifelong autonomous learners.
