Strategies for Handling Challenging Behaviors in the Classroom

We, as teachers AND Montessorians need to understand the power of relationships! Relationships represent the foundation of everything in life, especially when we work with kids. Our preconceptions can often prevent us from seeing the real child that is hidden from normal view! Some children will be more challenging than others, but every child WILL be different. If we are going to tackle this challenge, we need to prepare with some real introspection and reflection on what we must do. We must come prepared because we must not forget that we are the adults in these relationships. We are the ones with the tools and strategies to make this happen.

Maria Eva Chaffin is the founder, owner, and director of Seeds of Life Montessori Academy, an inclusive school serving children from 18 months to 12 years old.  Originally from Venezuela, she currently holds two master’s degrees in education and is currently completing her doctoral research on special needs and Montessori as well as an AMS Montessori Teacher Certification in early childhood. Her extensive teaching experience includes over 23 years working with neurodiverse children.  She is a published co-author on the subject and has been invited to present at Montessori events around the country and hosts regular teacher education web sessions to help teachers and administrators around the world deliver the best Montessori experience possible.
